CPATH Meeting Minutes Date: October 8, 2007 Time: 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Location: Michigan State University, East Lansing MI Next meeting: October 22, 2007 Time: 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Participants listed by group:
General Agenda: (attachment 1)
Time line is included at the end of the agenda file. It includes activities, outcomes and deliverables for each timeline item (Mark Urban-Lurain). Power-point presentation Side discussions: - Is there something missing in the time line? How does the time frame works for folks? - Do students connect to labor market in this region? Do we need to re-focus to a more general labor market to identify workforce computational skills? - The conclusion of this side discussion was that if students in this region have the appropriate skill set then the employers would like it and generate job offers. Tom will make available the data about where engineering graduates go. It shows disciplines by major. - Other related question is where do LCC students go to work? Louise will find out if there are some figures about this subject. - From SAMPI perspective evaluation would look at both populations, university and community college students. - The next step is curriculum development so LCC and MSU are more than enough participants from higher education at this time. - Discussion about labor market heterogeneity: labor markets are very different from each other. The process needs to be applicable at different labor markets (Jeannine). The definition of computation is different in different labor markets (for example Civil, Computational Eng.). We need stratification and different kinds of surveys for different kinds of companies (Neeraj). - As a starting point the department advisory board and college advisory board would be a good cross-section of disciplines. - Discussion about steering committee: Can recruit WIRED folks as members. We should not limit to the geographic aspect. The steering committee needs to be broad and think broadly, it should identify where the gaps are and give advice as to how we can fill them. It is important to keep in mind the college goals and the labor market realities. It is also important to consider where is the region and where is it going (entrepreneurs). It is important to link local economy to local academic structure. - Where is the data coming from? The current departmental surveys are aimed to collect information to determine the quality of the program. CSW has a 2004 snapshot that looks at the labor market in 2004. This data set also has projections. It covers a subset of occupations. - When the steering committee is in place what happens to our current group? (Pete). This is the working group and it will continue as the working group. The steering committee reviews and advises (Mark). 4. Steering Committee - Discussion about particular persons for the committee (Monroe and associates "lean Eng"). Meetings are expected to be bi-monthly. - Proposal to look at professional societies such as: Engineering society of Detroit, Michigan consulting base, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), SAE (it appears from their web site that it is simply SAE, it is no longer Society of Automotive Engineering), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). - Need to identify stakeholders among mid Michigan initiative. For Civil Eng.location is not and issue but for mechanical and electrical it is necessary to look outside Mid Michigan and determine where the graduates are going. - Suggested locations: Lansing,Battle Creek, Detroit,Midland, Grand Rapids, and Chicago. These locations would represent a good sample for industries and disciplines. - The steering committee should be represented equally by industry and professional engineering societies. - Proposed sectors are: Auto/manufacturing (mechanical and electrical), Computing, Bio/Chemical, Materials science. - What do we present to the steering committee as a recruiting tool? Web page is a good hook. The web page needs to be finished before the end of the year. - CSW will start the list of potential steering committee members. The sectors to be considered are industry sector and professional societies. Tom has a GM contact person. The number of members will be about 12. - Stakeholder engagement is a different issue; we need to start thinking about this. 5. Evaluation: SAMPI (see handout) - CSW collects stakeholder data (industry and professional engineering societies). We use it to create a proposal. It needs to fit into SAMPI evaluation. - The data informs the process to write a new proposal. The evaluation activities inform the whole process and have an impact in curriculum changes. - All the data is communal property. 6. How to manage work flow: - Discussion about Wiki: People agree that Wiki is a good tool to handle documents that are set to evolve. - During dinner Mark showed us the teleconference settings. We will have some meetings using this tool. - Mark and Jon will explore technology options and make them work for us. - Mark will look into web design options for our web page. - CPATH name changed to CPACE. Passwords will be sent to everyone. 7. Logistics: - Meetings were planned until the end of this year as follows: - Monday October 22 (2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) - Wednesday November 7 (3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.) Video, location TBD - Monday November 26 (2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) Face-to-face (F2F) location TBD - Wednesday December 19 (2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) F2F, location TBD Action items
